Gokarna's beaches lie in a chain south of the temple town, each separated from the next by a headland with a footpath over it. Om Beach is the best known, shaped like the symbol it is named for. From its far end a path climbs over the rocks to Half Moon Beach and then on to Paradise Beach, each smaller and emptier than the last. The walk is the point: an hour or two of sea views, shade and small coves, with a swim at the end. Go in the morning, carry water, and turn back before the light goes, since the path is not lit.

Good for: beach walks, quiet swims, sunset watchers
