The Kerala backwaters are a web of lakes, canals and rivers behind the coast, and Alleppey is where most people set out onto them. The famous way is a houseboat, a converted rice barge with a crew, that drifts through the canals for an afternoon and moors for the night. A cheaper and in some ways better way is the public ferry or a small canoe through the narrow village canals, where the boats are too big to go. Either way the pleasure is the same: paddy fields below the water line, coconut palms, kingfishers, and village life passing on the banks.

Good for: slow travellers, families, anyone who likes being on water
