Yerevan is the capital of Armenia, lying on the Ararat plain in the west of the country near the Hrazdan River.
Yerevan traces its origin to the Urartian fortress of Erebuni, founded by King Argishti I in 782 BC. It was later ruled by Persians and others, joined the Russian Empire in 1828 and was largely rebuilt in the 20th century as the capital of Soviet Armenia, with buildings of pink volcanic tuff. It became the capital of independent Armenia in 1991.
Yerevan's people speak Armenian, written in an alphabet created by Mesrop Mashtots in the early 5th century, and city life spills into cafés, parks and squares on warm evenings.
Yerevan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and an inscription found at Erebuni records its founding date.
