Where it is
Vindhyachal is a temple town on the southern bank of the Ganga in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh, where the Vindhya hills meet the river, about 8 km from Mirzapur and 65 km from Varanasi.
History
The goddess Vindhyavasini, she who dwells in the Vindhyas, is named in the Puranas, and her temple is revered as one of the major Shakti Peethas. Together with the Ashtabhuja and Kali Khoh temples in the hills, it forms the trikona, a triangle of shrines long walked by pilgrims, beside Mirzapur, an old river-trading town on the Ganga.
People
Vindhyachal's people speak Hindi and local dialects, and many families serve as priests, pandas and stall-keepers for the pilgrims. The Mirzapur area is known for its hand-knotted carpets and for Kajari, the folk songs of the monsoon.
