Viñales is a small town in Pinar del Río province in western Cuba, set in a green valley ringed by steep-sided limestone hills.
The valley's red soils have been farmed for tobacco since the 19th century, and traditional methods such as ploughing with oxen are still used today. Its farms, villages and striking landscape were listed by UNESCO as a cultural landscape in 1999.
Viñales's people speak Spanish and many are guajiros, country farmers, who grow tobacco, coffee and food crops and welcome travellers into their homes and farms.
The rounded, steep-sided hills of the valley, called mogotes, are the remains of an ancient limestone plateau worn away over millions of years.
