About Trou aux Biches

  • Coastal

Where it is

Trou aux Biches is a small coastal town in the Pamplemousses district on the north-west coast of Mauritius, between Grand Baie and Port Louis, with a public beach on a calm, reef-protected lagoon.

History

Like the rest of the north-west coast, the area lay within French and then British Mauritius, its people working the sugar estates and the sea. The beach drew hotels from the late 20th century and was named the World's Leading Beach Destination at the World Travel Awards in 2011.

People

The nearby village of Triolet, home to many Mauritians of Indian descent, gives the area its temples and festivals, while families from Port Louis come to the beach on weekends.

Known for

  • A sheltered beach with clear water
  • Snorkelling and diving close to shore
  • Glass-bottom boat trips
  • Sunsets on the west-facing coast

Did you know?

Triolet, just inland, has the Maheswarnath Mandir, one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in Mauritius, founded in the 19th century.
