Hiking nature trails, visiting painted churches, wine tasting in villages, winter skiing on Mount Olympus. A quieter find: The painted church of Panagia tis Asinou, with its fine Byzantine frescoes.
Commandaria sweet wine, village halloumi, soutzoukos grape-and-nut sweets and loukoumi.
The Troodos Mountains rise in the centre and west of Cyprus, the island's largest mountain range, with Mount Olympus as their highest point.
The mountains sheltered monasteries and villages through the Byzantine era and later periods of foreign rule. Kykkos Monastery was founded in the late 11th century, and ten painted churches decorated with Byzantine and later frescoes were listed by UNESCO in 1985. The cool slopes have long served as a summer retreat from the hot lowlands.
The mountain villages are Greek-speaking communities known for wine making, rose water, sweets and hospitality, with many traditions kept alive by families who return for summer and festivals.
The Troodos range is one of the best-preserved ophiolites in the world, a slice of ancient ocean floor pushed up above the sea.
