Where it is
Tirunelveli is a city on the west bank of the Thamirabarani River in southern Tamil Nadu, between the Western Ghats and the Gulf of Mannar coast, south of Madurai.
History
An ancient Pandya town, Tirunelveli served as a secondary capital of the Pandya kingdom in the 13th and 14th centuries. It later came under the Vijayanagara Empire, the Madurai Nayaks and briefly the Nawabs of Arcot before the British East India Company took control, and its twin town of Palayamkottai became a centre of schools and colleges.
People
Tirunelveli's people speak Tamil in a distinctive southern dialect, and farming along the river, trade and a long tradition of schooling shape the city, which is famous across Tamil Nadu for its halwa.
