Where it is

Tbilisi is the capital of Georgia, set in a valley along the Mtkvari River beneath steep hills in the east of the country.

History

Tradition says King Vakhtang Gorgasali founded the city in the 5th century after finding hot springs here, and its name comes from the Georgian word for warm. Tbilisi was ruled at times by Persians, Arabs, Mongols and Ottomans, joined the Russian Empire in the 19th century and became the capital of independent Georgia in 1991.

People

Tbilisi's people speak Georgian, written in its own unique alphabet, and hospitality centres on the supra, a long feast led by a toastmaster called the tamada.

Known for

  • Sulphur baths in Abanotubani
  • Old houses with carved wooden balconies
  • Georgian wine and feasts
  • Narikala Fortress

Did you know?

Tbilisi's name comes from the Old Georgian word tbili, meaning warm, after the hot springs that still feed the city's bathhouses.
