About Taveuni

  • Island
  • Forest

Where it is

Taveuni is the third-largest island of Fiji, a long volcanic island east of Vanua Levu covered in rainforest and fringed by reefs.

History

Fijian chiefs of the Cakaudrove confederacy have long held power on the island, with their seat at Somosomo. Coconut plantations spread in the 19th century, and much of the island's eastern side is now protected in Bouma National Heritage Park.

People

Taveuni's villages speak Fijian, and life follows farming, fishing and village ceremonies, with Somosomo the seat of the paramount chief of the area.

Known for

  • The 180th meridian crossing the island
  • Soft coral diving on the Rainbow Reef
  • Waterfalls in Bouma National Heritage Park
  • The rare tagimaucia flower

Did you know?

The tagimaucia, a red and white flowering vine, grows naturally only in the highlands of Taveuni and is a national symbol of Fiji.
