The Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve lies in the Chandrapur district of eastern Maharashtra, in the Vidarbha region of central India, covering teak and bamboo forest, hills and lakes.
Tadoba National Park was created in 1955, and it was later joined with the Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary to form the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. The Andhari river, which flows through the forest, gives the reserve the second half of its name.
Villages around the reserve are home to Gond and other Adivasi communities, and Marathi and Gondi are spoken; farming, forest produce and work as guides and drivers sustain local families.
The reserve takes its name from Taru, a village chief who, by local legend, was killed in an encounter with a tiger, and a shrine to him stands beside Tadoba Lake.
