Where it is

St. Moritz is a high alpine resort in the Engadine valley in the canton of Graubünden, south-east Switzerland, set above Lake St. Moritz at about 1,800 m.

History

Bronze Age offerings found at its mineral springs show they were known in prehistory, and St. Moritz grew as a summer spa. In 1864 a local hotelier bet a group of British summer guests that they would enjoy the winter here, a wager often said to mark the start of winter tourism in the Alps, and the resort hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948.

People

The Engadine's own language is Romansh, in its Puter form, though German and Italian are now more widely spoken in St. Moritz. Villages nearby keep Engadine houses decorated with sgraffito, and each winter thousands of skiers race across the frozen lakes in the Engadin Skimarathon.

Known for

  • Skiing on Corviglia and Corvatsch
  • The Cresta Run and the natural-ice bob run
  • White Turf horse races on the frozen lake
  • The Bernina Express and the Glacier Express
  • Engadine nut tart (Engadiner Nusstorte)

Did you know?

The Olympia Bob Run, opened in 1904 between St. Moritz and Celerina, is the oldest bobsleigh track in the world and the last one still built from natural ice each winter.
