About South Goa

  • Coastal

Where it is

South Goa is the southern part of Goa, stretching from the Zuari estuary and the port of Mormugao to the Karnataka border, with Margao as its main town and the forested Western Ghats along its eastern edge. At the end of 2025 its Quepem, Sanguem, Dharbandora and Canacona talukas became the new Kushavati district.

History

Chandor, then called Chandrapur, was an early capital of the Kadamba kings before the region passed to Vijayanagara and the Deccan sultanates. Salcete fell to the Portuguese in the 16th century as one of the Old Conquests, while Ponda, Quepem, Sanguem and Canacona were added only in the 18th century as the New Conquests. Portuguese rule ended in 1961.

People

South Goans speak Konkani, and English is widely used. The Catholic villages of Salcete are known for their church feasts and a love of tiatr, Konkani musical theatre, while the temple villages of Ponda celebrate Shigmo and other Hindu festivals; fishing and coconut and rice farming shape rural life.
