Seoraksan rises in the Taebaek Mountains in the north-east of South Korea, near the East Sea coast and the city of Sokcho; its highest peak, Daecheongbong, reaches about 1,700 m.
Seoraksan's valleys have sheltered Buddhist temples since the Silla era, among them Sinheungsa, traditionally said to have been founded in the 7th century. The mountain became a national park in 1970, and in 1982 the area was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The towns around Seoraksan, such as Sokcho and Yangyang, are Korean-speaking communities that live from fishing, farming and mountain tourism. Sokcho's Abai Village was settled by families from the north during the Korean War and is known for dishes such as squid sundae.
Daecheongbong is the highest peak of the Taebaek Mountains.
