Sentosa is a small island just off the southern coast of Singapore's main island, linked to it by a causeway, a cable car and a monorail, and facing the Singapore Strait.
The British fortified the island in the late 19th century, and the guns of Fort Siloso guarded the western approaches to Singapore's harbour until the Second World War. After the British forces left, the island was developed from the 1970s as a resort, and Resorts World Sentosa, home to Universal Studios Singapore, opened in 2010.
Few people live on Sentosa apart from the residents of Sentosa Cove's waterfront homes; the island is mainly a place of leisure for Singaporeans of every community, who come for its beaches, trails and attractions. English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil are all heard among its visitors.
The island's old Malay name, Pulau Blakang Mati, is usually translated as island of death behind; it was renamed Sentosa, meaning peace and tranquillity, in 1970.
