Seattle is the largest city in Washington state, United States, on an isthmus between Puget Sound and Lake Washington, with the Cascade and Olympic mountains on either side.
Seattle was founded in the 1850s on land of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples and is named after Chief Seattle. It grew as a port and timber town, boomed in the Klondike gold rush, and later became home to aircraft, software and coffee companies.
Seattleites are known for their love of the outdoors, their coffee and their music, and the city mixes long-established families with people drawn by its technology companies.
Pike Place Market, opened in 1907, is one of the oldest continuously operating public farmers' markets in the United States.
