Moyenne Island's tiny nature trail
Boats leave from Mahé, and the airport to fly into is Seychelles International (SEZ).
Snorkelling, kayaking and glass-bottom boat trips around its reef islands: Sainte Anne Island, Moyenne Island, Cerf Island and Round Island.
Walk Moyenne Island's tiny nature trail, and have a beach lunch on Cerf Island.
April to May or October to November, calm between the trade winds. Bring snorkel gear.
Sainte Anne Marine Park lies just off the east coast of Mahé in the Seychelles, a few kilometres from Victoria, and protects eight small islands, among them Sainte Anne, Cerf, Moyenne and Round, with their reefs and seagrass beds.
In 1770 Sainte Anne Island received the first settlers of the Seychelles, French colonists and enslaved Africans and Indians, before the settlement moved to Mahé. In 1973 the islands and their waters became the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, one of the first marine parks in the Indian Ocean.
Only a few people live within the park, mainly on Cerf Island, and most of the islands are given over to nature and small resorts. The boat skippers and guides who run trips from Mahé speak Seychellois Creole, English and French.
Moyenne Island was bought in 1962 by a British newspaper editor who spent the rest of his life planting trees and caring for giant tortoises there; it later became a national park of its own.
