May to September, while it is warm. Bring swimwear.
Pula (PUY), about 40 km away.
St Euphemia's Church, the old town, the harbour and the Lim Channel. Add some truffle hunting and Istrian wine tasting.
Off the swimming rocks in the Golden Cape forest park, a quieter spot. For dinner, look for truffles and Istrian olive oil.
Rovinj is a harbour town on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, on the Adriatic, its old town crowded onto a small hilly promontory that was once an island.
The old town stood on an island until the channel separating it from the mainland was filled in during the 18th century. Rovinj was ruled by Venice from 1283 until 1797, which shaped its architecture and its Italian heritage, and it later belonged to Austria, Italy and Yugoslavia before becoming part of independent Croatia.
Rovinj is officially bilingual, and both Croatian and Italian are spoken, reflecting its long Venetian past; some residents still speak Istriot, an old Romance language of the area. Fishing families gave the town the batana, a flat-bottomed wooden boat now celebrated in its own ecomuseum.
The statue of St Euphemia on top of the church's bell tower turns with the wind, working as a weathervane.
