The Rann of Kutch is a vast seasonal salt marsh in the Kutch district of Gujarat, in western India, made up of the Great Rann north of the Kutch mainland and the Little Rann to its south-east.
The Rann was once covered by shallow waters of the Arabian Sea until tectonic uplift cut it off from the sea, and the Harappan city of Dholavira stands on an island within the Great Rann. Kutch was ruled for centuries by the Jadeja Rajputs from Bhuj, and the region was rebuilt after a severe earthquake in 2001.
Kutch's people speak Kutchi and Gujarati, and the region is home to herding and craft communities such as the Rabari, Ahir and Meghwal, known for embroidery, bandhani tie-dye and ajrakh block printing.
During the monsoon the Rann floods into a shallow sheet of water, and as it dries in winter it leaves behind the crust of white salt that gives the White Rann its name.
