Hiking boots, layers
Stavanger's white-wooden old town
May to September. Wear hiking boots and bring layers.
Stavanger (SVG); it is about 1 h from there.
Cruise the Lysefjord below the cliff, or take on the Kjeragbolten hike.
Yes — its white-wooden old town is a hidden gem, and Stavanger's seafood is the thing to eat.
Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, is a flat-topped cliff in Strand municipality in Rogaland county, south-west Norway, rising about 600 m above the Lysefjord, east of the city of Stavanger.
The cliff was formed about 10,000 years ago, when water from a glacier froze in cracks in the rock and split away great angular blocks. Its name was coined around 1900, when the local tourist organisation, Stavanger Turistforening, began promoting walks to it, and in 2013 Nepalese Sherpas improved the main path.
The cliff rises above a thinly populated fjord landscape where people speak Norwegian and have long lived from farming and fishing; today tourism and the oil and gas industry centred on nearby Stavanger are major employers.
The climactic cliff-face fight of the 2018 film Mission: Impossible – Fallout was filmed at Preikestolen.
