About Pondicherry

  • Coastal

Where it is

Pondicherry, officially Puducherry, is the capital of the union territory of Puducherry, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal south of Chennai, and is surrounded on land by Tamil Nadu.

History

Arikamedu, just south of the town, is thought to be the Roman-era trading port of Poduke. The French East India Company set up a trading post here in 1674, and apart from Dutch and British occupations Pondicherry remained the capital of French India until it passed to India in 1954, a transfer formalised in 1962.

People

Most people speak Tamil, and French, still an official language of the union territory, is spoken by a small community and taught in French schools. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926, and the international township of Auroville, founded in 1968, have drawn residents from across India and the world.

Known for

  • The French Quarter and its colonial villas
  • The Promenade along the Bay of Bengal
  • Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville
  • The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
  • French bakeries and Franco-Tamil cooking

Did you know?

Streets in Pondicherry's French Quarter still carry French names, such as Rue de la Marine and Rue Saint-Louis, and some residents of the town hold French citizenship.
