Fly into Phu Quoc International (PQC), on the island.
Beach days at Sao Beach, snorkelling in the southern islands, night markets, the cable car to Hon Thom. A quieter find: Ham Ninh, an old fishing village on stilts.
Fresh seafood, fish sauce and peppercorns from the island's farms.
Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand off the south-west coast near the border with Cambodia, in Kien Giang province.
Phu Quoc was long a quiet island of fishing and pepper farming, used as a prison camp during the Vietnam War. From the 2000s it grew rapidly into one of Vietnam's main beach destinations.
Phu Quoc's people speak Vietnamese, and many families still fish or make the island's famous fish sauce, alongside newer work in hotels and tourism.
Phu Quoc is famous across Vietnam for its fish sauce, made from anchovies fermented in wooden barrels.
