About Pamukkale

  • Inland

Where it is

Pamukkale is a natural site and village in Denizli Province in south-western Türkiye, north of the city of Denizli, where hot springs have built white travertine terraces down a hillside above the Menderes river valley.

History

The spa city of Hierapolis was founded above the springs in the 2nd century BC and flourished under Rome as a place of healing, with baths, temples, a great theatre and a vast necropolis. It became an early Christian centre linked by tradition with the apostle Philip, and earthquakes eventually emptied it. Hierapolis-Pamukkale became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.

People

Local people speak Turkish and live from farming, tourism and the textile industry of nearby Denizli, known for its towels and cotton goods. The Denizli rooster, a local breed prized for its long crow, is the city's emblem.

Did you know?

Pamukkale means cotton castle in Turkish, a name for the brilliant white terraces formed as the warm, mineral-rich spring water loses carbon dioxide and deposits calcium carbonate.
