About Navi Mumbai
- Coastal
Where it is
Navi Mumbai is a planned city on the mainland across Thane Creek from Mumbai, in the Thane and Raigad districts of Maharashtra, stretching between the creek and the Parsik hills.
History
Planning of Navi Mumbai began in 1971 under the state agency CIDCO, to take pressure off crowded Mumbai. Its planned nodes, such as Vashi, Nerul and Belapur, grew up on land of salt pans, paddy fields and villages, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port and the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which opened to flights in December 2025, have made it a major hub.
People
Navi Mumbai's residents come from across India, and Marathi, Hindi and English are widely spoken. The older Agri and Koli village communities keep their own festivals and seafood traditions.
