About Nadi

  • Coastal

Where it is

Nadi is a town on the west coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of Fiji, and the main arrival point for visitors to the country.

History

The area grew with the sugar cane industry, worked from the late 19th century by indentured labourers brought from India. An airfield built here during the Second World War became Fiji's main international airport and turned the town into the country's tourism hub.

People

Nadi is home to both iTaukei Fijians and Indo-Fijians, so Fijian, Fiji Hindi and English are all heard in its markets, temples and churches.

Known for

  • The main international airport
  • Boats to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands
  • A colourful Dravidian-style Hindu temple
  • Orchid gardens in the Sabeto hills

Did you know?

The Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple was built in the traditional Dravidian style by craftsmen brought from India.
