Delos, the sacred island next door
June to September. Pack swimwear and sunscreen.
Catch Little Venice at sunset, see the windmills and explore Mykonos Town. Then it's Paradise Beach and the beach clubs.
Yes — Delos, the sacred island, is next door, and a boat will take you over.
Kopanisti cheese and fresh seafood.
Mykonos is a small, rocky island in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, Greece, lying between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos, just across a narrow channel from the ancient sacred island of Delos.
In antiquity Mykonos lived in the shadow of neighbouring Delos, supplying the great sanctuary of Apollo. It passed to Venetian lords in the 13th century and was Ottoman from 1537 until the Greek War of Independence, in which the island's heroine Manto Mavrogenous fought, and from the 1960s it became a favourite of the international jet set.
Mykonians speak Greek, and fishing and seafaring were the island's livelihood before tourism. Small whitewashed chapels dot the countryside, island specialities include kopanisti, a peppery soft cheese, and louza, cured pork, and Petros the pelican has been the island's mascot since the 1950s.
Neighbouring Delos, the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, was so sacred that in the 5th century BC the Athenians ruled that no one could give birth or be buried there.
