Marari Beach lies at Mararikulam, a fishing village on the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala's Alappuzha district, north of Alappuzha town, with coconut groves and the backwaters close behind it.
Mararikulam has long been one of the fishing villages strung along the Alappuzha coast. Nearby Arthunkal grew around a church founded by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century, now St Andrew's Basilica, and in recent decades small resorts and homestays have brought visitors while the fishing beach keeps working.
Mararikulam's Malayalam-speaking fishing families still launch boats from the sand and haul shore-seine nets by hand, while inland households farm coconuts and make coir from the husks. Arthunkal's feast of St Sebastian each January draws pilgrims from across Kerala.
