Where it is
Malegaon is a city in the Nashik district of northern Maharashtra, on the Girna River with the Mosam River flowing through its centre, north-east of Nashik on the old Mumbai–Agra road.
History
Malegaon grew from a hamlet of gardeners called Maliwadi. In the 18th century the Maratha chief Naro Shankar built its fort, and the craftsmen brought from Surat and northern India to build it settled in the town; weaving later made it one of Maharashtra's major textile towns.
People
Marathi and Urdu are the main languages, and weaving on powerlooms has long been the chief livelihood, alongside trade and farming in the Girna valley.
