Mahébourg is a small town on the south-eastern coast of Mauritius, on the bay of Grand Port, and the main town of the Grand Port district, a short drive from the island's international airport.
The town was founded in 1806 under French rule and named after the governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais. In 1810 the bay saw the Battle of Grand Port, a French naval victory over the British, shortly before the island passed to Britain.
Mahébourg's people speak Mauritian Creole and French, and the town keeps an older, small-town pace, with fishing families, market traders and the families who have run the same shops for generations.
The Battle of Grand Port in 1810 is the only French naval victory inscribed on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
