The night ceremony when Meenakshi's idol is carried to rest

About Madurai

Where it is

Madurai is a city in southern Tamil Nadu on the banks of the Vaigai River, on the plains east of the Western Ghats, and is the state's third-largest city after Chennai and Coimbatore.

History

Madurai has been a major settlement for more than two thousand years: it was a Pandya capital and, by tradition, the seat of the Tamil Sangam assemblies of poets. After a period as the seat of the Madurai Sultanate in the 14th century, it came under Vijayanagara and then the Nayak dynasty, who from the 16th century rebuilt the city around the Meenakshi Temple; the British took direct control in 1801.

People

Madurai's people speak Tamil, and the city lives by the temple calendar, above all the Chithirai festival in April and May celebrating the marriage of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar. Known as the city that never sleeps, it is famous for its jasmine, its Sungudi cotton saris and food stalls that stay busy late into the night.
