About Komodo National Park

  • Island

Where it is

Komodo National Park covers the islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar and many smaller islets between Sumbawa and Flores in the province of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, with Labuan Bajo on Flores as its gateway.

History

Komodo dragons were known to islanders long before Dutch colonial officers reported them in 1910, and the species was scientifically described in 1912. The national park was founded in 1980 to protect the dragons and their habitat, later extending its care to the surrounding seas, and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

People

Fishing villages inside the park, such as Kampung Komodo, are home to the Ata Modo, who speak their own Komodo language, along with Bajau and Bugis families from elsewhere in the archipelago. Labuan Bajo on Flores has grown from a fishing village into a hub for boat trips and diving.

Known for

  • Komodo dragons in the wild
  • The Padar Island viewpoint

Komodo dragons, the largest living lizards, can grow to about 3 m long and live in the wild only on a handful of Indonesian islands, including Komodo, Rinca and western Flores.
