Kenting lies at the southern tip of Taiwan on the Hengchun Peninsula in Pingtung County, with the Taiwan Strait to the west, the Bashi Channel to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the east.
The Hengchun Peninsula was home to Paiwan communities before Han Chinese settlers arrived, and the Qing built the walled town of Hengchun in the 1870s. The Eluanbi Lighthouse followed in the 1880s to guard the dangerous waters off the cape, and Kenting became Taiwan's first national park in 1984.
Kenting's people speak Taiwanese Hokkien and Mandarin, and Paiwan communities live in villages across the peninsula. The old walled town of Hengchun is known for its folk songs, sung to the two-stringed moon lute, and for the onions grown on its windy plains.
Strong seasonal winds, known locally as the falling mountain wind, blow down from the hills across the Hengchun Peninsula.
