Where it is
Jamshedpur, also known as Tatanagar, is an industrial city in the East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, where the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers meet on the Chota Nagpur Plateau, ringed by the Dalma hills.
History
Jamsetji Tata dreamed of an Indian steelworks, and after his death in 1904 his successors chose the village of Sakchi, where construction began in 1908. The first steel ingot was rolled in 1912, and the Tata works grew into one of India's first planned industrial cities, laid out with parks and wide roads.
People
Jamshedpur's people come from all over India: Hindi, Bengali, Santali, Bhojpuri, Odia, Urdu and Punjabi are all widely spoken. Santal and other Adivasi villages surround the city, which celebrates Durga Puja, Chhath and Sohrai as well as Founder's Day, Jamsetji Tata's birthday on 3 March.
