About Jabalpur
- Riverside
Where it is
Jabalpur lies on the Narmada River in eastern Madhya Pradesh, in the Mahakoshal region, with rocky hills around the city and the marble gorge of Bhedaghat close by.
History
The Kalachuri kings ruled the region from nearby Tripuri from the 9th century, and later the Gond kingdom of Garha-Mandla held it; its queen, Rani Durgavati, died fighting a Mughal army in 1564. After Maratha rule the British took Jabalpur in 1818 and made it a major cantonment, and it remains an important centre of India's defence manufacturing.
People
Hindi is the city's main language, and Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi and Sindhi are spoken by smaller communities. Many families have links to the army and the ordnance factories, and the ghats of the Narmada, such as Gwarighat, draw crowds for river festivals.
