Izmir is Türkiye's third-largest city, on a deep gulf of the Aegean Sea on the country's west coast.
Izmir is the ancient Smyrna, settled by Greeks and later a Roman city whose agora still stands. For centuries it was a great Ottoman trading port with a mix of communities, and a fire in 1922 destroyed much of the old city.
Izmir's people are known in Türkiye for their relaxed, outward-looking way of life, and the city's evenings are spent along the waterfront.
The Konak clock tower was built in 1901 and is the symbol of Izmir.
