A Shaiva temple town as sacred as it is beachy; Mahashivratri is the peak, and the beaches are the other half of the visit.
Gokarna is a temple town on the Arabian Sea coast of Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district, between the Gangavalli and Aghanashini rivers, with the forested Western Ghats rising inland.
Gokarna has been a centre of Shiva worship since ancient times and is mentioned in the Mahabharata and in Kalidasa's Raghuvamsha. Legend holds that Shiva's Atmalinga came to rest here after Ganesha tricked Ravana, who was carrying it to Lanka, into setting it down, and the Mahabaleshwar Temple that enshrines it was patronised by dynasties from the Kadambas to the Vijayanagara kings.
Kannada is the main language, and Konkani is also spoken along this stretch of the Uttara Kannada coast. Priestly families serve the temples and guide pilgrims through their rites, while fishing, coconut groves and beach tourism support the villages around the town.
The name Gokarna means cow's ear in Sanskrit, and the town is one of Karnataka's seven Muktikshetras, sacred places where Hindus perform rites for the dead.
