Layers, rain gear
The Skageflå mountain farm
May to September. Bring layers and rain gear.
Fly into Ålesund (AES), then allow about 3 h by road and ferry.
The Seven Sisters falls from a fjord cruise, plus Dalsnibba, the Eagle Road and Flydalsjuvet. Or get closer by kayaking under the waterfalls.
The Skageflå mountain farm. And do try the local lamb and brown cheese.
The Geirangerfjord is a 15 km branch of the Sunnylvsfjorden in the Sunnmøre region of Møre og Romsdal county, western Norway, a narrow arm of the sea between sheer mountain walls that ends at the village of Geiranger.
Glaciers carved the fjord during the ice ages, and for centuries farmers worked small mountain farms on ledges high above the water, such as Skageflå and Knivsflå, which are now abandoned. In 2005 the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord were listed together as the West Norwegian Fjords World Heritage Site.
Geiranger is a village of only a few hundred people, who speak Norwegian and live mainly from tourism and farming; in summer, visitors far outnumber residents. The old fjord farms kept goats and sheep on ledges reached only by steep paths from the water.
The Seven Sisters waterfall faces a single fall across the fjord known as the Suitor, which, in local legend, is trying to woo the sisters.
