Where it is
Firozabad is a city in western Uttar Pradesh, east of Agra, on the plains with the Yamuna River flowing a few kilometres to the south.
History
The present town dates from around 1566, in the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar, and was named after Firoz, the Mughal official who rebuilt it. Glass and bangle making have been practised here for centuries, and in the 20th century the town grew into the centre of India's glass industry.
People
Braj Bhasha and Hindi are spoken, along with Urdu. A large share of the city's people work, directly or indirectly, in the glass trade, in furnaces, workshops and homes where bangles are joined, polished and decorated.
Known for
- Glass bangles in every colour
- Glassware, chandeliers and decorative glass
- Its nickname Suhag Nagri, city of bangles
- Nearness to Agra and the Taj Mahal
Did you know?
Because Firozabad lies within the Taj Trapezium Zone, created to protect the Taj Mahal from pollution, its glass furnaces were barred from burning coal and coke, and most switched to natural gas.
