Sunset at Gomti Ghat as the temple flag is changed
One of the Char Dham and of the Sapta Puri; Krishna's capital. Bet Dwarka is reached by boat (or the new Sudarshan Setu bridge).
Dwarka is a coastal pilgrimage town in the Devbhumi Dwarka district of Gujarat, at the western tip of the Kathiawar peninsula where the Gomti river meets the Arabian Sea.
Hindu tradition identifies Dwarka with the capital of Krishna, which the Mahabharata says was swallowed by the sea, and marine archaeologists have found ancient remains offshore. The present Dwarkadhish Temple dates largely from around the 15th and 16th centuries, and Adi Shankara is said to have founded one of his four mathas here.
Dwarka's people speak Gujarati, and the town's life revolves around the temple, its priestly families and the pilgrims who arrive all year. Fishing and salt-making sustain the villages of the surrounding Okhamandal coast.
The flag above the Dwarkadhish Temple is changed several times every day, and each new flag is offered by a devotee.
