Where it is
Dispur is the capital of Assam, a locality in the south of Guwahati in the Kamrup Metropolitan district, on the plain between the Brahmaputra River and the forested hills that rise towards Meghalaya.
History
Dispur was a small village when it was chosen as Assam's capital in 1973, after Shillong, the old capital, went to the new state of Meghalaya. The Assam Secretariat and Legislative Assembly were built here, and the locality has since been absorbed into the growing city of Guwahati, whose own history goes back to ancient Pragjyotishpura.
People
Assamese is the main language, and Bengali, Bodo, Hindi and Nepali are also widely spoken in Guwahati. Rongali Bihu in spring is the great festival, with Bihu dance and the woven gamosa cloth, and Durga Puja is also celebrated on a large scale.
