Where it is
Daman is a coastal town on the Arabian Sea at the mouth of the Daman Ganga River, the capital of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, bordered on land by southern Gujarat.
History
The Portuguese seized Daman in the mid-16th century and held it for about four hundred years, fortifying both banks of the river. India took over in December 1961; Daman was then part of the union territories of Goa, Daman and Diu and later Daman and Diu, and since 2020 it has belonged to the merged union territory.
People
Gujarati is the main language, with Hindi and English widely used, and a small Catholic community still speaks a Portuguese-based creole and keeps Portuguese-era churches and feasts. Fishing, trade and factories provide most work.
