Where it is

Corsica is a mountainous island in the Mediterranean and one of the regions of France, lying south-east of the French mainland, west of Italy and just north of Sardinia; its highest peak, Monte Cinto, reaches about 2,700 m, and Ajaccio is its capital.

History

Greek settlers founded Alalia, now Aléria, on the east coast in the 6th century BC, and in 238 BC Corsica became a Roman province together with Sardinia. In the Middle Ages Pisa and then Genoa ruled it, Genoa from 1284 until 1755, when Pasquale Paoli proclaimed an independent Corsican Republic. In 1768 Genoa ceded Corsica to France, whose troops ended the republic the following year.

People

Corsicans speak French and Corsican (Corsu), a language closely related to medieval Tuscan. Polyphonic singing (paghjella) is a living tradition, shepherds make brocciu, a fresh cheese of ewe's or goat's milk, and chestnut flour and cured meats such as figatellu and lonzu are island staples.
