About Capri

  • Island

Where it is

Capri is a small limestone island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrento Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples in Campania, southern Italy, divided between the towns of Capri and Anacapri.

History

Greek colonists were Capri's first recorded inhabitants, and the Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius built villas on the island. In the 14th century the Carthusian monastery of San Giacomo was founded, and in 1826 August Kopisch's account of rediscovering the Blue Grotto made Capri famous among artists and writers.

People

Capresi speak Italian and the Neapolitan dialect. Island workshops make handmade leather sandals and limoncello from local lemons, the insalata caprese of tomato, mozzarella and basil takes its name from the island, and on 14 May Capri town celebrates its patron saint, San Costanzo.

Known for

  • The Blue Grotto
  • The Faraglioni sea stacks
  • The Gardens of Augustus and Via Krupp
  • The Piazzetta
  • Monte Solaro and Villa San Michele in Anacapri

Did you know?

In AD 27 the emperor Tiberius moved to Capri and governed the Roman Empire from the island until his death ten years later, living in villas such as Villa Jovis on the island's eastern heights.
