Brașov lies in central Romania, in southern Transylvania, at the foot of Mount Tâmpa and close to the Carpathian Mountains.
Brașov was founded by Saxon settlers in the Middle Ages, who knew it as Kronstadt and made it a wealthy trading town. Its main Gothic church was renamed the Black Church after a great fire in the late 17th century blackened its walls. The town later grew into one of Transylvania's main cities.
Romanian is the main language in Brașov, a city also shaped by its historic Saxon German and Hungarian communities, whose churches and buildings still mark the old town.
The Black Church in Brașov is one of the largest Gothic churches in south-eastern Europe.
