Where it is
Bokaro, officially Bokaro Steel City, is a planned industrial city in Jharkhand, on the Chota Nagpur Plateau beside the Garga River in the valley of the Damodar, about 45 km from Dhanbad.
History
Bokaro was built from the 1960s around a steel plant planned with Soviet collaboration and run today by the Steel Authority of India. The city was laid out in sectors for the plant's workers, and in 1991 it became the headquarters of a new Bokaro district.
People
Hindi is the common language, alongside Khortha, the local speech of northern Chota Nagpur, and Bengali, Santali, Urdu and Maithili. Plant workers from across India live beside Santal and other Adivasi communities, and Chhath, Durga Puja and the harvest festival of Sohrai are all celebrated.
