About Blue Bay

  • Coastal

Where it is

Blue Bay is a sheltered bay on the south-east coast of Mauritius, in the Grand Port district near Mahébourg and the island's international airport, with a marine park in its lagoon.

History

The bay lies on Grand Port, the stretch of coast where the Dutch first settled Mauritius in the 17th century. Its lagoon was declared a national park in 1997, became a marine park in 2000 and was listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2008.

People

Blue Bay's neighbours in Mahébourg and the fishing villages along the coast speak Mauritian Creole, and many still fish the lagoon and run the boats that take visitors out over the coral.

Known for

  • Coral gardens close to the shore
  • Glass-bottom boat trips
  • A protected marine park
  • Calm water for swimming

Did you know?

The marine park covers about 353 hectares and protects some of the most varied coral in Mauritius.
