Where it is
Bhadrachalam is a temple town on the Godavari river in Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana, in the forested east of the state near the borders with Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
History
In the 17th century Kancharla Gopanna, a revenue official under the Qutb Shahi sultans of Golconda, built the Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple here and became revered as the poet-saint Bhakta Ramadasu. Local tradition links the area with Rama's forest exile, and the temple is often called the Ayodhya of the South.
People
Bhadrachalam's people speak Telugu, and the forests and villages of the district are home to Koya and other adivasi communities. Ramadasu's kirtanas are sung across the Telugu lands, and Sri Rama Navami brings pilgrims to watch the wedding of Rama and Sita.
