Ayia Napa is a resort town on the south-east coast of Cyprus, close to the headland of Cape Greco.
Ayia Napa grew around a monastery built in the Venetian period in the 16th century, which is said to stand where an icon of the Virgin Mary was found in the woods. For centuries it was a small farming and fishing village, and from the late 20th century it grew rapidly into one of the island's main beach resorts.
Local people speak Greek in the Cypriot dialect, with English widely used, and the town blends a quiet old village core around the monastery with busy summer resort streets.
The town's name is usually explained as holy forest, from the woods that once surrounded the old monastery.
