About Amaravati

Where it is

Amaravati is the planned capital city of Andhra Pradesh, rising on the right bank of the Krishna River in Guntur district, about 15 km south-west of Vijayawada.

History

When Andhra Pradesh was divided in 2014 and Hyderabad went to Telangana, the state chose to build a new capital on farmland along the Krishna, and the foundation stone was laid in 2015. The legislature and secretariat have worked from interim buildings at Velagapudi since 2017, and construction of the wider capital city continues.

People

Telugu is the language of the region, and English is widely understood. The capital area was a landscape of farming villages on fertile land along the Krishna, and Sankranti, the harvest festival, is the biggest celebration of the year.
