About Aizawl

  • Hills

Where it is

Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, is built along a series of steep ridges at about 1,100 m, just north of the Tropic of Cancer, between the Tlawng valley to the west and the Tuirial valley to the east.

History

Aizawl began as a British military post, Fort Aijal, established in 1890 after the Lushai expeditions, and it became the headquarters of the Lushai Hills district. Mizoram became a union territory in 1972 and a full state in 1987, with Aizawl as its capital throughout.

People

Aizawl's people are mostly Mizo, speaking the Mizo language, with English as the other official language. Choral singing is central to community life, and traditional culture lives on in the Cheraw bamboo dance, handwoven puan cloth and festivals such as Chapchar Kut.
